Delgado Legacy 1.16

Kinsley hugged her daughter, feeling an almost visceral need to hold her close and bask in that unconditional love her little one gave her.

Seeing him again after all these years had been such a shock to her system, she was still trying to process it all.

Gabriel Maverick……

The father of her little girl.

When she’d found out she was pregnant, she hadn’t even bothered trying to find him.  What was she supposed to have said to him?

Remember me?  Your drunken one night stand?  Surprise!  I’m pregnant!  Oh yeah and you’re going to jail for having sex with a 15 year old.   Sorry about that little lie I told you when I said I was 21.

Hope found her mother sitting on a bench under a tree and sat down next to her.  She wanted to ask her who the guy was but didn’t want to see her get upset again.  It was probably one of those Sims her mother called lowlives from back in their old neighborhood.

Except, he’d been wearing a detective’s uniform……..

Kinsley:  “You ready to go?  I thought we could go grab a burger.”

Hope hesitantly:  “Are you OK, mom?”

Kinsley forced laugh:  “Of course, why wouldn’t I be?”

Gabriel watched Kinsley walk away and his frown deepened.

He had never stopped thinking about her.  It was the memory of her that had gotten him through his darkest hours.  Memories of her beautiful face and that determination in her eyes that had pulled him through his painful recovery……

If she thought that he was going to let her walk away from him again?

She was sadly mistaken.

Now that he’d found her (after so many years of searching only to stumble upon her in a library….), he wasn’t about to let her disappear from his life another time.

Hope threw her hands up in a mixture of anger and confusion.

Who was this man that was getting her mother so upset!

She wanted to march right up and hit him with a stack of books!

Nobody upset her mother and got away with it, nobody!

Then seeing her mother walk away, she gave one final glare to the stranger and decided to follow her mom instead.

Turning, she made for the door.  Pretending to go outside so he wouldn’t know that her daughter was here…..his daughter….the kid he knew nothing about.  It had been a one night stand, it was never supposed to be anything more than that.

Except it had been….

She’d been young and reckless, foolish.

She’d worked so hard to overcome her past.  Then suddenly there he was; a living and breathing reminder of that past.  A reminder of all the mistakes she’d made.

A past that she wanted to forget forever.

She’d used a fake ID to go to the bar with her friends.  She was already having sex at the age of 15.  A foster kid, nobody gave a damn about her……

He stared at her, clearly he was waiting for her to say something …. anything. Trust her to pick the one guy in an entire bar full of them who wouldn’t be happy with a quick ‘wham, bam, thank you ma’am’.

Kinsley desperate to push him away:  “Dude, it was just a one night stand. Seriously, you know how those work.  Meant absolutely nothing, so why would I leave you my number?  Anyways, I have to go.”

Gabriel

:  “Hey, wait a minute.  I’m not going to let you run out on me again.  What happened that night?”

Kinsley stares at him, he was the same guy but yet so different.  Harder and the scars on his face.  Did he get them while he’d been in the military?  He’d only been in town for a little while, just passing through on the way to his next assignment.

Gabriel

:  “Kinsley, why did you leave without saying good bye or leaving me your number or some way of contacting you?”
